  • Tools & Supplies:

  1. Measure your space and locate ceiling joists. Decide dimensions by measuring the items you plan to store. Running perpendicular to the joists is best but I built one running parallel with no complications.
  2. Start with four 2x4s six inches or so longer than the length of the shelf. Mark three inches or so in from each end and screw shelf uprights to top and bottom on each end. Divide the rest of the space in between by the number of compartments and screw in remaining uprights.
  3. Paint or prime ladder frames before mounting to joists. Mount one against the wall and the other one the desired depth from wall.
  4. Cut 1x6s to the depth dimension and prime or paint. Lay them in between dividers or notch them in around dividers.
  5. Screw in 1x6s on each end sit back and wonder how you ever managed without the extra storage space
