Using the handsaw cut the toy horse in half.
-
To make the base of the bookends, measure 2 pieces of 2.5cm x 20cm red oak for the uprights 23cm long and 2 pieces 12cm long for the bottom. Use a speed square to mark the boards correctly, and check them against the plastic horse height before cutting. Cut with a miter saw.
-
To complete the base, align the bottom and upright pieces to form an ‘L’. Make 2 pilot holes on the interior upright board for the screws. Secure the pieces together using wood screws and fill the screw holes with wood putty. Once dried, sand the putty to be flush with the wood.
-
Sand any rough wood edges and remove any sawdust to prep for painting. Following the manufacturer's instructions, spray paint the bookends Flat Black on a drop cloth.
-
Fill the hollow toy horse halves with spray foam insulation. The foam expands so be careful not to overfill. When the foam insulation has dried, use a utility knife to remove the excess foam, leaving a flat surface. Following the manufacturer's instructions, spray paint the horses Metallic Pure Gold. Once the horse pieces have dried adhere them to the bookends using construction adhesive.
