- Set up a work space in a well ventilated area (such as a garage).
- Sand the entire surface lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
- Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
- Using a clean, lint free rag, flood the entire wood surface with Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Wood Stain. Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
- Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain, using a clean rag, wiping in the direction of the grain. Ensure that ALL excess stain is removed from the surface.
- Let dry for 1-2 hours.
- Next, tape off the edges with painter’s tape. Use 1 ½” tape and put it about ¾” around the board. Also, cover the sides with tape to protect them from overspray.
- Use the Rust-Oleum® Specialty Chalkboard Spray on the bottom of the tray. Hold the Chalkboard spray can about 10-16” from the surface. Press the spray button and begin covering the surface in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke.
- Apply 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart. For best results, apply multiple light coats versus one heavy coat.
- Allow paint to dry for 3 days before writing on surface.
