    • 1 Piece of Wood (2” Thick, 12” Wide, 3’ Long)
    • Handles
    • Sandpaper: grits 120, 180, 220
    • Super Glue
    • Painter's Tape
    • Tack Cloth
    • Clean Lint Free Rags
    • Old Sheets or Drop Cloth

  1. Set up a work space in a well ventilated area (such as a garage).
  2. Sand the entire surface lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
  3. Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
  4. Using a clean, lint free rag, flood the entire wood surface with Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Wood Stain. Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
  5. Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain, using a clean rag, wiping in the direction of the grain. Ensure that ALL excess stain is removed from the surface.
  6. Let dry for 1-2 hours.
  7. Next, tape off the edges with painter’s tape. Use 1 ½” tape and put it about ¾” around the board. Also, cover the sides with tape to protect them from overspray.
  8. Use the Rust-Oleum® Specialty Chalkboard Spray on the bottom of the tray. Hold the Chalkboard spray can about 10-16” from the surface. Press the spray button and begin covering the surface in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke.
  9. Apply 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart. For best results, apply multiple light coats versus one heavy coat.
  10. Allow paint to dry for 3 days before writing on surface.
