  1. Find a good spot to work and cover nearby items with drop cloths to protect them from paint splatters.
  2. Sand the entire surface lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
  3. Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
  4. Using a clean, lint free rag, flood the entire wood surface with Zinsser® Wood Stain . Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
  5. Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain, using a clean rag, wiping in the direction of the grain. Ensure that all excess stain is removed from the surface.
  6. Let dry for 1-2 hours.
  7. After the surface is dry, apply polyurethane with a high quality synthetic bristle paint brush.
  8. Allow to dry 2-4 hours.
  9. Using a pencil and tape measure, mark a line 1” away from each corner.
  10. Fill in the outline with Rust-Oleum® Specialty Chalkboard Brush On.
  11. Using a synthetic brush or foam brush apply the Chalkboard Paint on the surface. Avoid excessive brushing. Use light, even stokes to ensure an even and smooth finish.
  12. The chalkboard finish is ready to be used after 3 days. Before writing, condition the surface by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire area and erase.
  13. Once completed, place your chalkboard in a special place for everyone to see.
