How to Make Block Letters for Your Holiday Mantel

+

The great thing about these DIY block letters is that you have endless options for making the perfect holiday mantel decoration for your unique style. For this project, we chose a common Christmas buzzword--Noel. But, feel free to get creative and choose any word or phrase you like. You can also try swapping out different letter sizes, paint colors, scrapbook paper patterns, or even add some Glitter for a little sparkle!

  1. PREPARE: Always work in a well-ventilated area and cover your workspace with a drop cloth to protect it from overspray. Wipe down the block letters with a tack cloth to remove any dirt or dust.
  2. PAINT: To paint the green base color on the letters, first shake your can of Ultra Cover 2X Satin spray paint (Satin Green Apple) for one minute after the mixing ball begins rattling. Hold the can 10-16" away from the letters and spray in an even back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Spray 2-3 light coats on the letters a few minutes apart. Make sure the back and sides of each letter are completely coated. The fronts of the letters don’t need to be painted since they’ll be covered with the scrapbook paper. Set the letters aside to dry for one hour.
  3. PAPER: Once the letters are dry, lay them flat on your scrapbook paper (face down), and trace them with a utility knife. Use a glue stick to adhere the paper cutout to the face of each letter.
  4. FINISH: Let the glue dry for about 15 minutes before displaying.
Once your block letters are completely dry, assemble them on your mantel for the holidays! If your mantel is still looking a little bare, check out these DIY Modern Nutcrackers to complete your look.
